Renco Home Improvement has been designing bathrooms and managing home improvement projects for over a decade. Here is a list of things we advise that you take into account before you tackle a bathroom renovation project:
1. Failure to take water into account. A bathroom is first and foremost a room about water. Make sure that your plumbing system is functioning properly.
2. Do not use materials that do not stand well with water in the bathroom area.
3. Avoid cheap construction materials such as poor quality windows, veneered cabinetry, laminate counters and poorly grouted tile.
4. Slippery floors. Although buffed-out tile and polished stones are beautiful, they should never be used on a bathroom floor. Use small tiles with texture, especially on the shower floor. The many grout lines and textured finish will provide traction.
5. No natural light. This is a big problem for any room but it is especially problematic in the bathroom. Make sure there is a window to let sun in to dry the water and sanitize the surface of the counter and fixtures. Windows are also important to clean and refresh the air.
6. Wrong measurements. Measure, measure and measure again. You don’t want to end up with a large gap between the toilet and the wall or faucet fixtures that are excessively large for the sink.
7. Making sure the existing plumbing fittings in the walls and floor will be compatible with the new vanity, faucet, shower or toilet. This is especially true in older condos, where sometimes the building can’t provide the water pressure required to operate the new style multiple jet shower panels and shower sprays.
8. Consider the thought of installing new outlets for your electrical needs.
9. Lighting is extremely important. You need two different types, one to get ready and the other to create a relaxed atmosphere.
10. Plan your storage spaces. From niches in the shower that hold shampoos and conditioners to vanities that hold a variety of items.
